Position Overview

Lead ICARDA's Strategic Research Priority 3 on resilient livestock and rangeland systems for livelihoods and environmental health. This senior leadership role combines scientific direction with strategic portfolio management, connecting breeding, animal health, forage and rangeland science with climate adaptation, restoration, markets and policy to deliver measurable results for pastoralists and farmers in the world's drylands.

Main Responsibilities

  • Set scientific and strategic direction for SRP3, translating ICARDA's 2030 Strategy into a coherent, internationally competitive portfolio with clear scientific, development, environmental and policy outcomes.
  • Manage portfolio operations including scientific quality, budgets, staff, monitoring and learning, with adaptive decision-making based on evidence.
  • Build integrated research linking livestock and rangelands with crops, water, soils, biodiversity, landscapes, markets and livelihoods across ICARDA's research priorities.
  • Identify, adapt and deploy advances from partner institutions (universities, CGIAR Centers, research institutes, technology companies) into practical solutions for smallholder and pastoral systems, including genomics, digital phenotyping, precision livestock tools, remote sensing, AI and climate modelling.
  • Represent ICARDA internationally, shape global research and policy agendas on resilient livestock systems and dryland transformation, and build strategic alliances with national research systems, FAO, IFAD, UNEP, development banks, climate-finance bodies and the private sector.
  • Mobilize significant funding from bilateral and multilateral partners, philanthropic organizations, development banks and climate/biodiversity finance mechanisms to build a financially sustainable portfolio.
  • Lead, recruit and develop a geographically distributed multidisciplinary team, mentor emerging scientific leaders and establish standards of scientific quality, collaboration and accountability.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in livestock–rangeland systems, rangeland ecology, animal science, animal genetics and breeding, agricultural systems, agroecology or landscape ecology.
  • 12–15 years of substantial international research-for-development experience with senior responsibility for multidisciplinary teams, major research programs and complex portfolios.
  • Internationally recognized scientific record with evidence of influence beyond publications through shaping major research programs, international agendas, policy and practice.
  • Demonstrated track record securing, growing and managing multi-million-dollar international research-for-development investments and partnerships.
  • Proven success leading, developing and motivating multicultural and geographically distributed scientific teams.
  • Experience in low- and middle-income countries with smallholder, pastoral or agropastoral systems.
  • Evidence of research adoption, institutional change, policy influence or impact at scale.
  • Strong quantitative or systems-analysis skills.

Languages

Excellent written and spoken English is essential. French and/or Arabic is desirable.
