Introduction to the Position
z.systems is a fast-growing VC-backed tech company transforming traditional retail across Africa through a full-stack B2B2C digital ecosystem. We are revolutionizing independent grocery stores by integrating them into a digitally connected, owner-operated retail network. As part of our mission to reshape traditional retail, we are seeking a Tech Lead to drive our backend development efforts. This role is critical in enhancing our transactional and gamification platforms, supporting our growth and transformation objectives across the continent.
Your Role
- Lead and mentor backend engineers, ensuring high-quality delivery and clean code practices
- Architect, build, and optimize scalable transactional systems and gamification engines (loyalty, rewards, challenges)
- Ensure system reliability, security, and performance
- Define engineering best practices and make key technical decisions
- Support team members through code reviews, design sessions, and hands-on problem-solving
- Work closely with product and DevOps to ship production-ready features

Reporting directly to senior management, you will lead a group of skilled engineers while working closely with cross-functional teams including product and DevOps. Your Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years in backend engineering, with experience in a technical leadership role
- Extensive experience in backend engineering with a strong foundation in software development principles
- Proven track record in leading and mentoring engineering teams
- Expertise in managing transaction-heavy platforms and systems at scale
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Node.js / Express, Prisma ORM, and PostgreSQL
- Experience with AWS and scalable, production-grade architecture
- Knowledge of transactional flows and gamification systems
